We are pleased to report that despite numerous roadblocks, the Meadowdale International Raceway Preservation Association (MIRPA) car show on Saturday, September 19, was a huge success. Thanks to the vision of the Forest Preserve District of Kane County over two hundred cars were on display and thousands of track fans crowded the main straight during the run of the show.
The theme for the event was the 50th Anniversary reunion celebration of the Meister Brauser Racing Team, the dominant competitor at the track during the 1950s and ’60s. Honored guests included Harry Heuer, leader of the team, Don Devine team driver, and many other members and fans of the historic team. On display was the Meister Brauser Chaparral built by Troutman & Barnes.
While the original Meister Brauser Scarabs were committed elsewhere the Scarab continuation car currently in production at Scarab Motorsports was on display. The Scarab was commissioned by Lance Reventlow and built by Troutman & Barnes in 1957. Lead wrench “back in the day” was Chuck Daigh. He and Reventlow easily vanquished the field at the very first Meadowdale race in 1958, with Daigh first and Reventlow second by large margins.
An original factory race team Cobra that actually raced at Meadowdale in 1963, was joined by other sports cars that had the thrill of thundering down the main straight back in the tracks heyday. Many of the other cars on display were racers, sports cars, hot rods, customs, motorcycles, and even a go kart from that era.
Thanks to all who showed cars or came by to look at the cars, and hear the tales of those who actually raced or worked races at the old track in its heyday. Old photos, programs, ticket stubs, and other memorabilia were brought by many attendees allowing for a real glimpse to the past.
The Meadowdale International Raceways Preservation Association (MIRPA) plans this to be an annual event to promote and preserve the history of Meadowdale International Raceways located in Raceway Woods. You may have noticed that track “improvements” began the day after the event. Next year will bring improved track access for both the show cars as well as the spectators.
Without the history of Meadowdale Raceways, Raceway Woods would just be another Forest Preserve/Open Space… true, a very nice Forest Preserve Open Space, but of no particular attraction for historians, race fans, and other visitors. There are many communities that would love to have a historical attraction, a museum if you will, like the old Meadowdale Raceways site to bring tourists to their areas.
MIRPA seeks to compile race results, photos, memories and other memorabilia. If you have a favorite story you would like to share, we would love to hear it. If you have photos we would like to copy them. So much of the Meadowdale Raceways History was about to be lost. It is MIRPA’s mission to promote and preserve that history
Enclosed please find membership information for MIRPA. The founding member program has been extended until January 15, 2010. Be sure to save Saturday, January 30, 2010 to attend the first annual banquet open to MIRPA members and their guests. An interesting program on Meadowdale and racing will be presented.
In addition to the annual banquet, other MIRPA activities will include a clean-up day, assisting Kane County Forest Preserve with historic kiosks around the track, and the annual fall MEADOWDALE, MOTORSPORTS & MEMORIES Car Event. We are seeking volunteers to assist in all areas, please contact us if you can help in any way.
We still have a small quantity of event merchandise available, t-shirts, posters, programs, etc., please contact us if you missed the opportunity to acquire these items at the event.
We welcome and encourage your enthusiasm and participation in the effort to promote and preserve the history, care and enjoyment of Meadowdale International Raceways located in Raceway Woods.
We invite you to return the enclosed membership form and become a part of the preservation of this unique part of racing history.
